Senior developer

Kind are a strategic digital agency that helps socially-minded businesses to get the most out of their digital presence, and hopefully make the world a little better at the same time.

Due to the rate at which we’re growing, we're on the look out for a senior developer to help us build beautiful websites in Craft CMS and web applications in VueJS.

What you’ll be doing

The work

You’ll be working on a variety of digital projects for our growing, socially-responsible client base, as well as on internal projects. That means:

  • Building and maintaining websites, applications and custom integrations with Craft CMS and/or VueJS
  • Making sure we stick to our high standards for performance, code quality and UX
  • Keeping your eyes and ears open for ways we can refine those same standards and processes
  • Mentoring other team members and leading regular code reviews
  • Participating in daily stand-ups and monthly company strategic reviews

See the job description for a more complete picture.

Our stack

Right now most of our projects are built using some combination of:

  • VueJS
  • Craft CMS
  • Sass
  • ES6/7 + Babel + Webpack

However we’re always open to trying new and interesting technologies.

What we offer

Here’s what we offer in return for your time and attention:

  • Competitive salary + company bonus scheme
  • Sensible, flexible, family-friendly working hours, including opportunities for home working
  • Unlimited holiday allowance
  • Pension scheme
  • A relaxed working environment based on trust and mutual respect
  • A brand new Mac / linux machine of your choice, plus all the software you need to do your best work, and any other tools you need to work effectively.
  • Centrally located Nottingham office
  • Transparency about the state of our business. Nobody likes secrets. (Currently, we’re doing really well)
  • A professional development plan, including:
    • Your own conference and professional development budget
    • 10% time (one day a fortnight) to spend as you choose on your professional development, contributing to open source projects and/or staying on top of industry best practice
    • Regular reviews
  • We’ll take you out for lunch occasionally. Nottingham has some great places to eat these days
  • We all go out for drinks (soft or hard) quite regularly too

What we’re looking for

More than a portfolio or a checklist of skills, we’re looking for someone intelligent who takes pride in their work and is always keen to improve it.

So if you don’t quite match the description below but think we could be a good fit for each other, get in touch anyway. We’re of the opinion that it’s far easier to learn skills on the job than it is the right attitude to work.

Experience

You’ll…

  • Be inquisitive, resourceful and motivated
  • Likely have around five or more years in an agency or similar environment, or other equivalent industry experience.
  • Be knowledgeable in performance, debugging, and refactoring
  • Enjoy mentoring other team members
  • Be comfortable with working across the full stack to deliver features from idea to production
  • Enjoy working with clients rather than just for them
  • Like experimenting & trying things out
  • Be happy iterating quickly in small, multidisciplinary teams. No silos here.

Technical skills

This is a senior level position. You’ll be an expert in either PHP or JavaScript (or both, both is cool too).

If you’re a PHP dev, experience with Craft, especially plugin development, is a massive plus (though it’s not a requirement). Alternatively you’ll have a high level of familiarity with one or more modern frameworks (e.g. Laravel, Yii2 or Symfony / Express, Sails, or Hapi on the server side, or Vue / React / Angular in browser-land). We currently use Vue for our SPA-type needs.

You’ll also be highly proficient with skills and tools that make up modern web development: git; command line build tools; CI; unit testing; etc. We’re user-centred in our approach, so it’s important that you care and understand enough about UX to help us deliver experiences to the standard our clients have come to expect.

We’re a small team, so we’re also looking for someone who is willing and able to muck in with stuff like QA and UI dev when required.

This position might not be for you if you:

  • Are not comfortable with showing unfinished work to clients and users.
  • Want to plan every aspect of an app before starting to code.
  • Would rather be an expert in a single stack or language rather than learn multiple stacks.
  • Don’t really want to do front-end development from time to time.
  • Prefer owning a project or area of code individually rather working collaboratively.

The hiring process

To apply, send a CV + GitHub profile to [email protected], along with a brief cover note explaining why you are interested in the role and how your skills and experience, align with the job description. Please also include a link to a recent software project (professional or personal) that you’re proud of, and tell us why.

If we think you might be a good candidate to join us we’ll arrange an informal interview so that we can find out more about each other. This can be either face-to-face (if you’re near by) or phone / Skype.

Depending on the outcome of the first interview, we may invite you to do a technical test. This can be completed off-site. Candidates who advance past this stage will then be invited to meet us at out offices for an in-person interview and to meet the full Kind team.

Other stuff you’ll need to know

  • This is a full-time, permanent role, based in our central Nottingham office. We’re not looking for a contractor or someone remote at the moment.
  • You’ll need prove that to have the legal right to live and work in the UK.
  • We particularly welcome applications from members of groups who are under-represented in the digital industry.

No agencies please *

* No, seriously, we mean it. Don’t contact us if you’re a recruiter. Even if you’re different from all the other recruiters. If we want to talk to you, we’ll call you. Thanks.
